A walk-in cooler that is not maintaining proper temperature can quickly become a serious problem for any restaurant. In many cases, the issue may seem minor at first, but it can lead to product loss, downtime, and costly repairs if not addressed on time.

In this article, we share a real case from one of our recent service calls, where a walk-in cooler was not cooling properly due to a failing evaporator coil.

The Problem:

We were contacted by a local restaurant experiencing temperature issues inside their walk-in cooler. The system was running, but it was not maintaining the proper cooling conditions.

After performing a full inspection of the system, we identified that the evaporator coil had developed leaks, causing the system to lose refrigerant over time. As a result, the unit was unable to maintain proper pressure and cooling performance.

The Solution:

After explaining the situation to the customer, we proceeded with the following steps:

  • Gathered manufacturer information and ordered a new evaporator unit compatible with the existing system and refrigerant type
  • After obtaining the replacement evaporator unit, we returned to the site to perform the necessary repairs
  • Pumped down the refrigeration system
  • Safely disconnected electrical connections
  • Removed the existing evaporator unit
  • Installed a new evaporator unit
  • Installed new copper refrigerant lines and insulation
  • Brazed all connections and performed a pressure test using nitrogen
  • Confirmed no leaks at any of the connections
  • Performed a deep vacuum to remove moisture and contaminants
  • Reopened system valves and started the unit
  • Adjusted refrigerant charge to achieve proper system operation

Results:

After completing the installation and system startup, the walk-in cooler began operating properly.

Within approximately 30 minutes, the temperature inside the cooler dropped to around 45°F, and the system stabilized with proper operation and performance.

Important Note:

Refrigerant leaks are one of the most common causes of poor cooling performance in walk-in coolers. If not addressed early, they can lead to compressor damage and higher repair costs.
